Clerkenwell is an extremely popular area in the London Borough of Islington.
Its close proximity to the City and West End, lively nightlife and variety of art galleries and great restaurants ensures that Clerkenwell’s eclectic mix of properties – including lofts, Georgian townhouses and luxury apartments – are always in high demand.
Due to being such a superb location for living and working, the area is extremely popular with professionals working in the media industry and younger entrepreneurs of the creative businesses. Good shopping, some of London’s best restaurants (including St John, Moro, Smiths of Smithfield, Café du Marche, Cicada and Hix Oyster and Chop House) and some of London’s largest nightclubs (including Fabric) attract youthful crowds from miles around, as well as many of Clerkenwell and the Barbican’s residents.
The once-old village is now renowned for its iconic loft buildings and designer apartments. Yet with winding streets, pre-Victorian buildings, Smithfield meat market and Clerkenwell Green at its heart, Clerkwenwell still maintains an impression of its history and remains one of the better-preserved village centres in what is now central London.
Clerkenwell is located in the London Borough of Islington, south of Finsbury, northwest of the City, northeast of Holborn and east of Bloomsbury.
Bordered by Farringdon Road to the west (home to the Guardian and nearby Observer) and Smithfield meat market to the south, the neighbourhood follows Clerkenwell Road east as it turns into Old Street. Farringdon station is the key station in Clerkenwell which is soon to become the central hub for Cross Rail. Angel, Barbican, King’s Cross St Pancras and Chancery Lane are all very close to Clerkenwell.
The main streets and buildings include High Holborn, Chancery Lane, Gray’s Inn Road, Hatton Garden, Theobald’s Road, St. Bartholomew the Great church, Marx Memorial Library, London Metropolitan Archives, the London Masonic Centre, The Order of St John, The Eagle pub, Fabric nightclub, Smithfield market, Leather Lane market (great traditional market for clothing, accessory brands and food). Nearby areas include Bloomsbury, St Pancras, Holborn, King’s Cross, Smithfield and Finsbury.
Once the home to watch makers, jewellers and an enormous printing trade, Clerkenwell is primarily residential these days and an excellent area to buy property.
Due to Clerkenwell’s central location and proximity to the City, most former offices and warehouse buildings have been converted into flats. Clerkenwell flats attract purchasers that want character spaces and high-quality fit-outs in a quiet area that boasts great local amenities and a thriving market. Clerkenwell is the original home of the London loft. Properties include architect designed apartments; chic and contemporary split-level apartments; one, two, three or four bedroom traditional warehouses; duplex penthouse apartments; luxurious flats with balconies; period terrace properties; and one or two bedroom properties with versatile open-plan living spaces.

Once known as London’s ‘Little Italy’ due to its large Italian population from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, renting property in Clerkenwell is now most popular amongst the creative industries.
Artists and photographers began flocking east in search of cheap work space in the 1980's. The early 1990’s saw the development of new flats (pioneered by the Manhattan Loft Corporation's iconic Summer's Street Loft Building) create an even more eclectic mix of property to rent in Clerkenwell, offering loft-style living with a real flavour of Manhattan. Today, Clerkenwell boasts a range of properties to rent, including stylish studios flats with beautiful views; gated development housing overlooking leafy squares; luxurious duplex apartments; one, two or three bedroom penthouses; and enviable flats with access to a communal garden, gym and pool.
