Night time in Shoreditch
Packed with hip bars, leading restaurants, art galleries and loft apartments, and located about as close to the City as you can get, it is easy to see the perks of living in Shoreditch.
Like many previously industrial areas of London, Shoreditch has undergone considerable gentrification in recent decades. In the 1990s, a number of artists and designers began moving into the fading warehouses around Old Street, attracted by low rents and a peer group that included Damien Hirst and Alexander McQueen. Many of Shoreditch’s former industrial buildings have now been stylishly converted to cope with the increasing demand.
City workers and students now flock to live in the lofts of this metropolis of internet and fashion companies – frequenting the clubs and pubs of Curtain Road and Old Street that have become fashionable night time venues. For families, there are still a few Georgian terraces tucked away, and Haggerston Park contains a wide range of facilities including a conservation area, BMX track and children’s play area.
Shoreditch is a residential area in the London Borough of Hackney, loosely defined as the area bordered by Old Spitalfields Market to the south, Old Street to the north, Brick Lane to the east and Old Street Station to the west.
Shoreditch is located immediately north of the City of London, just 2.3 miles north east of Charing Cross. The closest underground station is Old Street, which is located in zone 1 on the Bank branch of the Northern Line, between Moorgate and Angel.
The main streets include Shoreditch High Street, Old Street, Curtain Road, Great Eastern Street, Calvert Avenue, Bethnal Green Road, Tabernacle Street, Hoxton Street, Hoxton Square and Club Row. Places to go out include The Foundry, Club 333, Mother, Zigfrids, Lounge Lover, (private members bar) Shoreditch House, Elbow Rooms, The Rivington Bar and Grill, Home Bar, Bluu, The Apprentice and Favella Chic. Places of interest include the White Cube gallery and Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Road. Good hotels including The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Hoxton Hotel and nearby Great Eastern Hotel. Nearby areas include City of London, Bethnal Green, Clerkenwell, Dalston, Hoxton, Haggerston, Finsbury, Spitafields, Islington.
Conversions to buy and rent abound in Shoreditch, where defunct factories, an old bakery, a police station and even a public baths has been converted into some delightful flats to rent. These prove popular amongst young professionals, first-time buyer couples and artists looking to take advantage of the comparatively cheap rent, in a tremendous location in London.
If you are looking to buy flats and houses rich in character, Shoreditch is also the place to go – refurbished council estates sit next to converted apartment blocks in an eclectic mix of property to buy. For larger properties, the four-storey Georgian town houses on Paradise Row and Victorian houses in Bethnal Green are the pick of the patch. These do get snapped up very quickly though, so be sure to get there early!
