St Paul's (EC4) Area and Property Guide

The maze of cobbled streets, courts, gardens and hidden churchyards that surround St Paul’s are some of the finest reminders of London’s original form.

St Paul’s has managed to retain much of its original layout and, despite widespread destruction in the Great Fire of 1666 and the Blitz nearly three centuries later, remains a warren of narrow streets and alleys rather than orderly grids. The magnificent St Paul’s cathedral itself was completed in 1710 and is probably best admired during a service, when you can enjoy the sound of one of the world’s greatest cathedral choirs.

St Paul’s fantastic location makes it a great place for anyone working in the City to buy or rent property. Although housing is sparse in this area, there are very desirable office-to-home conversions, purpose-built flats and a few apartment blocks, with more in development on Cannon Street. As a popular tourist haunt, great sandwich and wine bars, restaurants and independent shops are scattered throughout St Paul’s.

Location

St Paul’s is an area of EC4, loosely bordered by Newgate Street and Cheapside to the north, King William Street to the east, Upper Street and the Thames to the south, and New Bridge Street and Farringdon Street to the south.

St Paul’s Underground station is in Zone 1 on the Circle Line. Other nearby tube stations include Barbican (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan), Moorgate (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern), Bank (Central, Northern, Waterloo & City), Cannon Street (Circle, District), Mansion House (Circle, District), Blackfriars (Circle, District), Chancery Lane (Central), Farringdon (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan).

EC4 also has two of London’s major termini at Blackfriars and Cannon Street, which specialise in bringing workers in from all over south-east England and south London. The Millennium Bridge links St Paul’s to the Tate Modern Gallery across the river.

The main streets and buildings include Newgate Street, Cannon Street, St Paul’s Churchyard, Paternoster Square, New Change, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Old Bailey, the City of London School. Nearby areas include Moorgate, Monument, Aldgate, Fenchurch Street, Tower Hill, Blackfriars, Temple, the Thames.

Buying Property in St Paul's EC4

St Paul’s has a relatively small amount of houses for sale compared to the rest of London, most which can be found in the western sector of EC4. This area west of St Paul’s has some enviable property for sale, which is a popular choice for anyone that wants to be close to the City.

Buying property in EC4 started in the mid-nineties when a number of character-rich office-to-home conversions were created in the once-press offices. St Paul’s conversions to buy can be found around Fleet Street, including Wine Office Court (the original home of the Press Association), in the apartment blocks around St. Bride's Church and in the office conversions of Pemberton Row. Old purpose-built flats on Fetter Lane and newer developments on Furnival Street and High Holborn are also available as homes for sale. The south-western tip of EC4 provides some of the oldest converted accommodation in London, and is a fantastic warren of mazes, courts and gardens.

Renting Property in St Paul's EC4

Property to rent in St Paul’s EC4 is similarly located to the property in buy in St Paul’s EC4 – the further west you go, the more St Paul’s has to offer. The converted offices in western St Paul’s provide a variety of converted flats to rent. These desirable converted homes were created in the mid-1990s when the press moved away and left a number of press offices empty.

Property to rent in St Paul’s becomes rarer when you venture further east. Yet if you’re looking to rent a St Paul’s development with a water-side view, High Timber Street by the river has a number of desirable new flats to rent. Rent a flat along Cannon Street to be in a fantastic location for the area’s amenities, as will the apartment blocks to rent just north of Blackfriars Station and the flats to rent around Victoria Street. At the south-west tip of EC4, the Temple provides character-rich converted property, and a slice of history, being founded by the Order of the Knights Templar.
