Islington can of course mean the entire borough itself but is also commonly used to describe the area encompassing Barnsbury, Canonbury and Angel – bordered by Caledonian road, Holloway to the North, St Pauls Road, Southgate Road and City Road.
Islington is within sight of the capital’s financial heart, the City of London, and bordered by the boroughs of Haringey, Camden and Hackney. Its central location and excellent transport connections puts Islington only minutes away from London’s West End and theatres. The area is extremely well served with bus routes and has the international rail terminus at Kings Cross on its doorstep. At one end of Upper Street Angel tube station (Northern Line) serves city commuters, whilst at the top end Highbury and Islington station at Highbury Corner houses three separate lines including the Victoria tube line with trains to the West End, the Hertfordshire line currently run by FCC with direct trains to the City at Moorgate and also the overground line that runs across the width of London from Stratford to Richmond. The main streets and buildings include Upper Street, Essex Road, Canonbury Road, Camden Passage, Business Design Centre, Almeida Theatre, King’s Head Theatre, South Library, Union Chapel, N1 Shopping Centre. Nearby areas include Camden Town, Shoreditch, Finsbury, Barbican, Regents Park, Dalston, Clerkenwell.
