An array of Olympians – past and present – joined forces with The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust – to raise thousands of pounds to protect young cyclists at a glittering gala dinner at the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading Football Club, at the end of 2011.
Gold medal winning hockey players and Paralympian swimmers mixed with one of the stars of Rugby Union, JPR Williams, to raise almost £18,000 for the Trust – a charity that distributes free and low cost cycle helmets to children throughout the UK, as well as developing safer cycling educational school packs.
The Auction of Promises, conducted by Chris Currell, was one of the highlights of the night as a number of lots including cricket bat signed by the England and Indian cricket teams, a boxing glove signed by Frank Bruno and a signed Arsenal ball and tickets all went under the hammer.
